Best way to prevent Windows 10 from downloading and installing updates automatically? It sometimes is an issue for Windows users, but also prevents malware attacks by patching security vulnerabilities You can easily pause them via the Settings menu for up to 35 days.

Go to Start button and click Settings
Choose Update & Security
On the right side of the Settings window, click on Advanced options
Locate Pause updates section & toggle the switch to the right
To undo the setting, once again click on the switch, Windows will automatically check for updates

That's it! Once you pause automatic Windows 10 updates, you will be prompted to allow them to be installed on the date specified.

To disable automatic updates on Windows 10 permanently, use these steps:

Open Start.
Search for gpedit.msc and select the top result to launch the Group Policy Editor.
Navigate to the following path:

Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update

Double-click the Configure Automatic Updates policy on the right side.

Windows Update group policy settings
Source: Windows Central

Check the Disabled option to turn off the policy.

Group Policy disable Windows Update

Click the Apply button.
Click the OK button.
After you complete the steps, Windows 10 will stop downloading updates automatically on your computer. However, you'll continue to be able to install patches manually from Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, and clicking the Check for updates button.

If you want to re-enable automatic updates, you can always revert the changes using the same instructions, but on step No. 5, make sure to select the Not Configured option.
